Accommodation Description
Banghoek Place is situated a couple of blocks from Stellenbosch University and it is three
to four more blocks to the centre of the town, with 22 000 students, pedestrians and bicycles are the most common way of getting around in this second oldest town in South Africa, the Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture is evident all over town and the increased tourism has brought about many sidewalk cafes and restaurants, interspersed between fashion, souvenir, art, leather and jewelery outlets, there is a relaxed buzz in this very quaint town that is most pleasing to wander around.
There is a swimming pool at the guest house which will be welcomed in summer as temperatures can soar to high 30s. There are 16 ensuite rooms in a refurbished house that has warm wooden facades, the room and bathroom furnishings are Afro simple and minimalist , there are a few common areas scattered around the guest house where guests can relax or share travel stories with other guests or one could take time out in the hammock under the trees, next to the pool.
Wine Tour
You will be collected for the wine tour at around 10 am , meet the rest of the group then head out to Simonsig, a farm known for their
exceptional red wines and their Cape Classique sparkling wine, (we may not say Champagne here, although there as many bubbles), here we do a cellar tour and discuss the art of wine tasting before moving on to Fairview, where you will need to choose five tastings from over 70 wines offered, the cheese tasting goes down rather well and the goats cheese is a speciality here, then onto Franschhoek for lunch followed by a visit to Dieu Donne, which has magnificent views down the gorgeous vineyard lined valley. The last wine estate is usually Boschendal which dates back to 1685 with old London Plane trees and Cape Dutch buildings with the striking gable and thatched roof , then back to Stellenbosch over Helshoogte pass to arrive back around 5pm
Cape Town, Gardens - a traveller’s paradise:- a large double storey Victorian House with Oregon pine floors,
a beautiful wooden staircase with matching balustrade, uninterrupted views of Table Mountain from the deck and groovy café’ bar area, here lights meals are available from 7.30am to 10pm, breakfast ranges from freshly delivered croissants to a big hearty fry-up, other menu items include filled focacia and pitas as well as tasty salads and quick toasties. Tantalising cocktails, local and regional beers are available to quench the biggest thirst.
Dorm rooms are in the Main House but Double or Twin ensuite rooms are in two separate Victorian Guest Houses 200 metres down the street from the Main House.
There is always an eclectic mix of people hanging out or going somewhere, the famous Mount Nelson Hotel is three minutes down the road and this is also the Hop-on Hop-off City Tour stop. There are numerous shops and restaurants close by and the city centre is only a 15 minute walk down through the Company Gardens, where the Dutch first established vegetable gardens in the mid 17th Century in a bid to counter scurvy on their sailing ships.
