Soweto Cycle Tour

We head to the bustling city for a day tour of Johannesburg, the hub of South African business. Entering Jozi – affectionately named by the locals, our first stop is the highest building in Africa.  The Carlton centre was built in the 1960’s and is 50 stories high.  From the viewing deck at the top of the Soweto-cycle-bikerbuilding we are able to get our bearings of this vast city.  Our next stop is the Apartheid museum which depicts the rise and fall of apartheid in South Africa.
We make our way to Soweto in time for lunch and try the local cuisine.  After lunch we get together at the starting point of the biking tour of Soweto. You will be introduced to Soweto, its history and its people. More than three million people are living here speaking all the of 11 official languages of South Africa, you will be taught some of the most common phrases to be able to greet people as you are cycling along the streets. Speaking and interacting with the locals at a real level and not from the comfort of a closed vehicle. Learning about the different cultures and history of this famous city.  Go to places such as a former migrant workers’ hostel for men. Here you will be introduced to the culture and life today by your local guide. Continue to Meadowlands, famous for the forced removals from Sophiatown in the 1950's. Cycle through historical landmarks of the 1976 student uprisings and visit the memorial site of Hector Pieterson. You will also cycle down Vilakazi Street where Nelson Mandela used to live and where Bishop Desmond Tutu has his home. Finish the biking tour of Johannesburg off at the local shebeen, have a drink, play pool and dance to kwaito music.
This day tour of Johannesburg gives you insight about Soweto's many different faces, the Soweto uprisings and the resistance against Apartheid. You will also see and learn how the communities have changed and developed to what it is today.
Included: English speaking guide, Entrance fees and transportation as indicated and lunch.

Jozi by Foot

Welcome to Johannesburg, the heartbeat and “Hub” of Africa. Home to the Rainbow Nation, Jozi-fruitsellerit is in this fast paced city that South Africa’s radical and political formation is most evident. Take a walking tour of Johannesburg from roots to present. Starting our tour at the Carlton Centre, the top of Africa.  From the 50th floor we can view Johannesburg and get an idea of which direction our walking tour of Johannesburg will take us.

Explore the inner city on streets lined with a combination of historic and modern buildings where new incorporates the old. A stroll down Main Street Mall with its creative architecture in the form of old mining equipment takes you back into the early beginnings of the “City of Gold”. The artwork on Gandhi Square reminds us of the city’s multicultural roots.
Next we make our way on this walking tour of Johannesburg to the vibrant Newtown Precinct where we visit a diverse range of historical and cultural sites. We visit the highlights of Newtown including the Mary Fitzgerald Square where we look inside one of the last colonial compounds now the Workers’ Library and Museum. Explore Museum Africa which provides an honest and even self-critical look at some of the problems South Africa has faced. The museum’s main focus is on the culture of the indigenous people. It would be unfair not to mention  the beautiful display of artworks, containing Pre-Raphaelite and Impressionist paintings, even an impression of ‘the Anglo-Boer War’. Many South African artists are presented. Explore this multi-media museum includes an audio/visual display of Nelson Mandela’s treason trial.
We then move on to the Market Theatre which is now housed in the old fruit and vegetable market. After a truly interesting morning discovering the “Real Joburg” we move on to a totally different side of the city. The SAB World of Beer is a fun filled showcase of brewing   in South Africa. SAB’s multimillion Rand investment into the area helped lay the foundation for what has become the Newtown Precinct. From Ancient Mesopotamia, through Africa and Europe, the tour unveils beer heritage all the way to a honky-tonk pub of Johannesburg? Mining camp days and a traditional Soweto shebeen. Here we have a chance to enjoy a refreshment with a delicious pub lunch taking in the panoramic view of the city.
