Tour Summary: This two hour tour of the city centre of Cape Town takes you back to 1652 when the Dutch first arrived in their ships to set up a supply station for fresh water and vegetables, soon thereafter, slaves from Madagascar, Indonesia, Malaysia and India were brought to Cape Town, mix in some sex and you get the humble beginnings of the Rainbow Nation. Guided by drama student Dean, daily goings on 300 years ago are brought to life in rhymes, song and different costumes providing a fact filled walk down a most interesting slavery lane.
Itinerary
Meet at the steps of the Old Town House on Greenmarket Square at 10am, this was where fresh produce was sold and all rules governing slaves were read out, then head up to the Bo Kaap, over Buitengracht (beyond the canal) Road into the predominantly Moslem area where you will find five mosques in a relatively small area, brightly coloured houses, cobbled roads and a vibrant community. We walk down to to the St Stephens Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk and then on to Heritage Square, where we can see the oldest grape vine i
n South Africa, then down to the Golden Acre for a look at the ruins of the first reservoir and an explanation of the reasons for this structure so close to the fort, we have a walk through the fresh Flower Market, so colourful and vibrant with flower sellers shouting out their special offers in their local dialect. Diligent research sets the foundation for this entertaining and educational tour, which through the stories of several real characters, brings to life the city of Cape Town as experienced by the slaves. It recalls tales of tragedy and triumph as
well as searing scandal. This 2-hour walking tour begins at Green Market Square, takes in the Bo-Kaap, Long Street, Castle Street, The Golden Acre, The Parade Ground, the Castle and the Slave Lodge and is also an excellent introduction to Cape Town history and the layout of the city.The tour runs Monday – Friday and starts at 10h00 on the steps of the Old Town House in Greenmarket Square.
